I have often wondered while making clay idols (a favourite past time with me), how the lines, shapes, colors continuously change and re-change themselves to form newer entities, often irrespective of our wishes. Human life too follows a similar pattern. My journey from my native place to the City of Joy is a pattern too. It’s a journey of a traveler, called Siddhartha. It’s my journey in search of my destination.
My early life in Katwa, a small yet vibrant town, has provided me with the creative fodder that has nourished me and supplied me with the motivation to make a mark, a small one to start with, in the world of creative art. But every idea requires the technical expertise to back it up. My choice of completing B.V.A. from The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship and subsequently M.V.A. in Visual Art from Rabindra Bharati University was for the purpose of gauging my potential and channelizing it in the right direction. This phase of my life also introduced me to the world art and artists like Van Gogh, da Vinci, Picasso and Michealangelo to name a few. High art can transcend the limitations of the canvas and penetrate the human heart and soul. The masters showed me how to dream and then concretize the dream fragments into realty – more beautiful and more sensuous.
Interestingly , my education also taught me the viability of the new age art tools- namely the softwares like Photoshop, Freehand, Corel Draw and the likes that can complement my talent and produce magic. Currently, I am involved in the world of advertising as a graphic designer.
During my college days and even beyond it, I have made it a point to participate in exhibitions and workshops like the one at ‘KALA MELA’ organized by the ‘THE INDIAN SOCIETY OF ORIENTAL ART’ in Kolkata in 1995; the Annual Art Exhibition of ‘RAJYA CHARU KALA UTSAB’ in 2001; and the Group Art Exhibition of ‘MON’ at ‘BIRLA ACADEMY OF ART & CULTURE’ in 2002.
Recognition is perhaps the greatest motivation possible for anyone, especially for people like me who are engaged in the world of art. My humble work has been appreciated with ‘HARI MOHAN BAGLI AWARD’ by THE INDIAN COLLEGE OF ART AND DRAFTSMANSHIP in 1997; the ‘EDIT AWARD’ in ‘Water Colour’ by THE INDIAN COLLEGE OF ART AND DRAFTSMANSHIP in 2000 and the Best Award’ in ‘POSTER’ from The Annual Art Exhibition of THE INDIAN COLLEGE OF ART AND DRAFTSMANSHIP in Kolkata in 2000. |
